Recently, Springer Publishing Company Executive Editor Allan Graubard gave a talk entitled The Art of Publishing. The event was held at the Inaugural Caring Science Summer Institute & World Caring Conference (co-sponsored by The Watson Caring Science Institute, with which we publish a nursing series) and gave an overview of all aspects of publishing an academic or professional book. Topics included choosing a subject, identifying your audience, proposing the book, developing the concept with the acquisitions editor, working on the manuscript, and the role of the publisher’s marketing and sale departments in promoting the book.
Graubard’s presentation at the World Caring Conference, which also hosted Deepak Chopra as its keynote speaker, consisted of a three-hour interactive talk, including a brief writing workshop with examples from actual proposals. Such presentations are particularly valuable in the current publishing landscape, which is rapidly and dramatically changing. Pedagogy, as Graubard suggests, should capitalize on some of these changes, such as the proliferation of new technologies and shifting reading styles.
At Springer Publishing, Graubard publishes award-winning books in nursing and related health science subject areas. He honed his expertise in nursing and health science publishing during his tenure as Founding Director of the National League of Nursing (NLN) Press, where he scripted educational videos and programs, and has given similar talks on publishing at various major conferences nationally throughout his career. As well as an editor, Graubard is a poet, playwright, and critic, well-published internationally.
