The last Wednesday of every May is National Senior Health & Fitness Day. This year’s, on Wednesday, May 30th, is the nation’s largest annual health promotion event for older adults. Now in its 19th year, 100,000 older adults will participate in activities at more than 1,000 locations throughout the U.S.
Any local organization interested in the health and fitness of older adults is eligible to host a National Senior Health & Fitness Day event—they can just register by calling 1-800-828-8225. Event activities can include fitness walks, exercises, health screenings, health information workshops, and much more!
In terms of senior health and fitness, our latest edition of Health Promotion and Aging includes detailed descriptions of two of the author’s (Dr. David Haber’s) own programs that have been recognized by the National Council on the Aging‘s Best Practices in Health Promotion and Aging. These programs are comprehensive exercise programs in the community that include aerobics, strength building, flexibility and balance, and health education; and a health contract/calendar to help older adults change health behaviors.
