Take Action to Prevent Hepatitis at Work
While nurses need to know how to care for patients with hepatitis, it’s equally important that they understand how the disease is transmitted—and how to protect themselves from exposure on the job.
There are several types of hepatitis, including hepatitis A (HAV), B (HBV), C (HCV), D (HDV), and E (HEV). Due to their line of work, nurses are at particularly high risk of exposure to HBV.
Recent research shows that some—but not all—nurses have adequate knowledge about transmission modes and effective prevention strategies. With World Hepatitis Day approaching on July 28, now is the perfect time for nurses to take steps to educate and protect themselves.
Because hepatitis can cause serious liver damage and is one of the leading causes of liver cancer, timely prevention is critical.
