Preparing for the Adult CCRN® Certification Exam

As you’re getting ready to take the Adult CCRN® certification exam, staying cool, calm, and collected can make all the difference. Below are some practical preparation strategies and test-day tips to help you perform at your best.

Preparation Tips

  • Stay positive. Avoid negative thoughts about passing the exam—these can turn into self-fulfilling prophecies.

  • Set a test date and build a realistic study schedule that works for you.

  • Prioritize weaker areas. Focus first on the topics you’re less familiar with.

  • Use the content outline. Look at the percentage of each body system and allocate more time to higher-weighted topics.

  • Identify your learning style. Decide whether you study better alone or in a group, and prepare accordingly.

  • Use a variety of study tools. Flashcards, practice questions, review courses, and study books (both outline and narrative) can help reinforce knowledge.

  • Practice timed questions. Aim for about 2 minutes per question (50 questions per hour) to build comfort with pacing.

  • Review practice tests strategically. When going over practice questions, ask yourself why you missed it:

    • Did you not know the content?

    • Did you misread the question or answers?

    • Did you miss a clue (like an age, symptom, or timeline detail)?

  • Tackle your weakest areas. Don’t just review your specialty—you already know it well. Instead, focus on less familiar content areas.

On the Day of the Test

  • Eat well, but wisely. Have a healthy meal beforehand and limit liquids to reduce breaks during the exam. (Remember: breaks don’t stop the clock.)

  • Avoid last-minute cramming. It can increase anxiety. Instead, plan something enjoyable to do after the exam.

  • Know your route. Plan your travel ahead of time. Arriving late will raise stress, and being more than 15 minutes late means you won’t be allowed to test.

  • Bring required documents. You’ll need your approval letter and two forms of ID (one must be photo ID). Personal belongings aren’t allowed in the testing room—lockers are usually provided.

  • Use the tutorial. A short computer-based testing tutorial is available before the exam begins. Once you start the first question, your 3-hour timer begins.

  • Stay in the testing room. Leaving without authorization automatically voids your exam.

  • Manage your time. You’ll have three hours total—use pacing strategies to stay on track.

  • Get your results immediately. A score report is presented onsite once you finish.
