When Necessity Results in Invention: Jean Snyder and the ERMA
When Jean Snyder, DNAP, CRNA, read the tragic story of a vibrant young boy who went in for routine surgery and never came home, she was devastated. The cause of death: a medication error.
“As a mother and as a nurse anesthetist, my heart grieved for this loss. I knew that if we had a safe means to keep our syringes and vials, the mistake may have been recognized earlier, and perhaps that child may have had a different outcome.” – Jean Snyder
Motivated to prevent such tragedies, Snyder—owner of Jean Snyder CRNA Inc. and co-owner of Goodwin and Snyder Anesthesia Associates, PLLC, while working full-time at Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center—decided she had to take action. That’s when she invented ERMA (Error Recovery and Mitigation Aide), a tool designed to improve medication safety.
