What I Wish I Knew Before Becoming a Labor & Delivery Nurse
When I first became a labor and delivery (L&D) nurse, I didn’t quite know what I was getting myself into. I didn’t have children, I didn’t know anyone who did, and I hadn’t even held a baby before. Needless to say, I had a long road of learning ahead of me.
I loved every minute of the job, but inside I was terrified and overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information being thrown at me every single day. After almost a year in L&D, I’m finally beginning to feel confident and knowledgeable with my patients. Looking back, I wish someone had told me what this role would truly entail so that I could have been better prepared.
For anyone considering a career as a labor and delivery nurse—or even those who are just curious about what the job is like—this insight can help set expectations and provide guidance.
