Steps to Getting Your Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Certification
Get moving toward the next chapter in your career by taking the following steps to getting your Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) certification. Below, we provide the FNP certification requirements and additional information to consider before taking your exam.
Make Sure You Qualify for Your Exam!

Are you a graduate of an approved master’s, postgraduate, or doctoral degree program specializing in family NP from an institution of higher learning?

Is your program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing?

Did you pass the core 3P courses (Advanced Pathophysiology, Advanced Pharmacology, and Advanced Physical Assessment)?
-
Do you have a minimum of 500 faculty-supervised clinical practice hours?

Are you an active RN licensed in any state or territory of the United States?*
If you said yes to all five, you’re off to a great start!

The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
The largest nurse credentialing organization in the United States, the ANCC is the independent credentialing body of the American Nurses Association (ANA). To apply for an exam, first create an account on the ANCC website. You can also use the MYANCC mobile app to apply, renew certification, and track continuing-education (CE) hours.

The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB)
An independent organization affiliated with the AANP and AAENP. AANPCB offers three specialty exams: Family NP (FNP-C), Adult-Gerontology Primary Care NP (AGNP-C), and Emergency NP (ENP-C).

MSN or post-master’s certificate students: May apply 6 months before graduation.

DNP students: May apply up to 12 months before graduation, once all coursework and clinical hours are complete.
Your exam score will only be released once your official transcript (showing degree awarded and conferral date) has been received.

Candidates receive an Authorization to Test email from AANPCB, followed by a PSI Eligibility ID to schedule the exam.
Timelines and Actions
| Timeline | Recommended Activities Before Graduation |

| 3–4 months before graduation | Open an account on ANCC/AANPCB; confirm eligibility; review Test Content Outline and Reference List; review state board licensure requirements. |
| 4–6 weeks before graduation | Order 3–4 copies of your official final transcript. |

The ANCC will accept the professional, legally recognized equivalent of NP status from another country if applicants meet its certification criteria. Additional requirements apply for applicants educated and/or licensed outside the U.S.
