Steps to Becoming a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE®)

Get moving toward the next chapter in your career by taking the following steps to earn your CDE® certification.

Step 1: Make Sure You Qualify for the Exam

Before you apply, you’ll need to meet the eligibility requirements set by the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE):

  1. Meet the Discipline Requirement.

  2. Meet the Professional Practice Experience Requirement.

  3. Complete a minimum of 15 continuing education hours. See the full Continuing Education requirement here.

✅ If you said “yes” to all three, you’re ready to move forward!

Step 2: Apply for and Schedule the Exam

Once you’ve confirmed your eligibility, you’re ready to apply.

Application Fees

  • Initial Certification: $350

  • Renewal of Certification: $250

  • Expired Certification: $350

(Note: Each fee includes a $100 non-refundable processing fee.)

Step 3: Choose How to Apply

You have two options for applying:

  1. Apply and Schedule Online
    Start the process on the PSI Services website. Use the “Register for this Exam” option or select “Candidates” in the top navigation and follow the instructions. You’ll need your CDE®/certificate numbers when registering.

  2. Paper Application and Scheduling
    Locate the paper application in the Exam Handbook, fill it out, and mail it with all required documents and fees to:

    PSI/AMP
    Examination Services Department
    18000 West 105th Street
    Olathe, KS 66061-7543

    Tip: Write “NCBDE” in the upper left corner of the envelope under your return address.

Step 4: Start Studying

Most people spend 2–3 months preparing for the exam. Be sure to give yourself enough time to review all the content.
