How to Make the Practicum/Internship Experience Engaging for Future Counselors

/ Counseling / By Springer Publishing Editorial Staff / August 20, 2025

As educators, one of our key roles is preparing students for their practicum or internship—those pivotal experiences connect classroom learning with the real world. But how do we keep them engaged and excited about this phase of their journey? Here are some ways to create a classroom environment that truly supports their growth:

1. Bring Real-World Relevance to Class

Invite students to share their practicum experiences or tackle real-life case scenarios. Relating theory to what’s happening in their internships helps them process what they’re learning and think critically about their work.

2. Get Hands-On with Role-Playing

Simulate counseling situations in class where students can practice essential skills like active listening and intervention. Role-playing gives them a safe space to test their skills and get immediate feedback, building confidence for their real-world work.

3. Encourage Peer Collaboration

Internships can be challenging, and peer support is invaluable. Foster a space for students to share struggles and insights with each other. Peer discussions or group reflections help create a sense of community and reduce feelings of isolation.

4. Prioritize Self-Care

Counseling work can be emotionally draining, so make self-care part of the conversation. Whether through stress-management strategies or tips for setting boundaries, it helps students understand the importance of maintaining their well-being as they move into their internships.

5. Set Up for Career Success

Prepare students for life after their internship by focusing on practical career skills. Host mock interviews, offer resume-building workshops, and discuss ongoing education opportunities. This ensures they’re not just ready for their internship—but for the next step in their career.

Chapter 13 in  The Counseling Practicum and Internship Manual, highlights preparing students for post-graduation employment. This chapter also includes a self-reflection exercise designed to prepare your students for job search and interviews. Encouraging students to answer these prompts and discuss them with a peer will help them feel more confident and focused as they step into their future careers.

Growing througfh the Journey: A Self-Reflection Excercise

As you reach the end of your practicum and internship, take a moment to pause—not just to reflect on what you did, but to explore who you’ve become. Let these questions guide a thoughtful look inward:

  1. What moments during your internship truly lit you up inside—and what do they reveal about your future path?
  2. When you faced your biggest challenge, what did it teach you about your resilience, your values, or even your blind spots?
  3. Who made a lasting impression on your client, colleague, or supervisor—and why?
  4. What parts of the experience changed how you see yourself as a counselor?
  5. If you could carry only three skills or insights forward into your first job, what would they be—and why?
  6. Looking ahead, what kind of counseling environment feels like home to you? What do you imagine thriving in that space looks like?
  7. Imagine you’re mentoring a future intern—what golden piece of advice would you pass on?
  8. If you could improve just one aspect of the counseling program or internship process, what would it be—and how would it help others grow?
  9. How well did your training prepare you to meet the needs of clients from different cultures or backgrounds? What more could have been done?
  10. Looking back, did your placement model the kind of ethical professionalism you want to embody? Why or why not?
  11. What was your “a-ha” moment—the insight or experience that you’ll carry with you for years to come?

By blending hands-on learning, peer support, and career prep, we can ensure that students not only succeed in their internships but feel confident and prepared for their futures as professional counselors.
