How to Get Your CHSE™ Certification

Ready to take the next step in your career? Follow these steps to earn your Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE™) credential.

Step 1: Make Sure You Qualify

Before applying, confirm you meet the eligibility requirements:

  • ✅ Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent)

  • ✅ At least 2 years of experience in a healthcare simulation setting

  • ✅ Demonstrated simulation experience focused on learners in healthcare at any level

  • ✅ Continued use of simulation in healthcare education, research, or administration within the past 2 years

👉 If you answered “yes” to all four, you’re off to a great start!

Step 2: Apply for Your Exam

Applications are submitted online through the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) website. You’ll need to create a profile if you don’t already have one. (Note: SSH membership is not required to apply.)

During the application, you’ll be asked to provide 3 professional references. They’ll receive a Confidential Structured Report of Performance (CSRP) form to evaluate your effectiveness as a healthcare simulation educator. Be sure to notify your references in advance!

Application Fees

  • $395 USD — SSH, ASPE, and INACSL members

  • $495 USD — Non-members

📅 Applications are accepted year-round.

Step 3: Schedule Your Exam

Once approved, you’ll get an email from ISO-Quality Testing, Inc. (IQT) with details on how to:

  • Set up your User ID and Password

  • Register for your exam

  • Reschedule if needed

  • Choose your exam date and location

All CHSE™ exams must be taken at an approved IQT test site.
👉 See the current list of locations here.

You’ll have a 90-day window to schedule your exam once approved.

Step 4: Start Studying

Give yourself plenty of prep time—most candidates take 2–3 months to study thoroughly.

  • Try our free CHSE practice quiz to test your baseline knowledge.

  • Use study guides and review manuals for in-depth prep. Our top pick:
