Test Preparation for the Day of the Exam

Arrive at your exam cool, calm, and collected by following these 10 simple steps on test day!

10 Steps to Take on Exam Day

  1. Minimize Discomfort
Dress comfortably, bring a sweater in case the room is cold, and choose a seat with minimal distractions (such as away from windows).

  2. Arrive Early
Get to the testing site at least 20–30 minutes before the exam. Use this time to relax, breathe, or practice light visualization techniques.

  3. Be Cautious With Stimulants and Sleep Aids
Avoid taking too much sleeping medication the night before or overloading on coffee before the exam.

  4. Eat Before the Exam
A balanced meal gives you energy and focus. Avoid heavy foods that can make you groggy.

  5. Use the Restroom Ahead of Time
Don’t waste test time worrying about your bodily needs—go before you enter the exam room.

  6. Choose the Right Breakfast
Avoid heavy meals or only simple carbs. Instead, pair protein with complex carbohydrates (e.g., eggs, nuts, cheese, whole-grain bread) to maintain steady energy.

  7. Watch Your Fluid Intake
Don’t overhydrate before the test, and be sure to empty your bladder before entering.

  8. Dress in Layers
Testing centers may have fluctuating temperatures, so layered clothing ensures comfort.

  9. Leave Valuables at Home
Jewelry may not be allowed (other than a wedding or engagement ring). Minimize what you bring to avoid stress.

  10. Bring a Watch (if allowed)
Having a watch can help you manage time and pace yourself throughout the exam.
