15 Exam-Day Tips for Nursing Certification Success

Not only should you be prepared with the knowledge necessary for success on your certification exam, you should also know what you can do before exam day to walk into the room with confidence. Below are 15 proven tips to ensure you’re as prepared as possible for exam day.

1. Set a Regular Study Schedule

Establish a consistent study plan—daily or weekly—and stick to it.

2. Take Breaks

Do not study for more than two hours without a break. Step away for at least 10 minutes.

3. Avoid Distractions

Turn off the television, silence your phone, and study in a distraction-free environment.

4. Focus on Difficult Subjects First

Tackle your most challenging topics early; these will take the most time and energy.

5. Attend Review Sessions

Pay attention to hints instructors give about the test. Take notes and ask questions.

6. Clarify Exam Emphasis

Ask your instructor to specify which areas will be emphasized on the test.

7. Review Practice Materials

Work through practice tests, sample problems, and review guides to reinforce your learning.

8. Try a Study Group

Collaborating with peers can improve accountability and deepen understanding.

9. Address Test Anxiety

Consider using test-anxiety tools, such as guided relaxation or hypnosis audios.

10. Boost Your Confidence

Practice guided imagery and positive self-talk. Focus on what you know, not what others know.

11. Manage Anxiety

Experiment with strategies that work best for you—breathing, stretching, or mindfulness.

13. Skip the All-Nighter

Aim for 8 hours of sleep before the test, but never less than 6. Rested minds perform better.

14. Set Multiple Alarms

Set a morning alarm and a backup to ensure you wake up on time.

15. Know Your Route

Plan your route to the test site ahead of time. Running late causes unnecessary stress and can affect performance.
