Steps to Earning Your Gerontological Nurse Certification

With excerpts from Gerontological Nurse Certification Review, Third Edition, by Alison E. Kris, RN, PhD

So, what do you do next? Get moving toward the next chapter in your career by taking the following steps.

1. Make Sure You Qualify for the Exam

Do you have:

  1. A current, unrestricted RN license?

  2. Documentation that you’ve practiced full time as an RN for the equivalent of two years?

  3. A minimum of 2,000 hours of clinical practice in gerontology within the past three years?

  4. Documentation of 30 continuing-education hours in the gerontology specialty acquired in the past three years?

If you said yes to all four, you’re off to a great start!

2. Apply for the Exam

The first step is to apply through the ANCC. Visit the Gerontological Nursing Certification page.

The ANCC administers exams at Prometric Testing Centers located in 180 countries. Once you register with the ANCC, go to www.prometric.com/ANCC to set up your test date and time.

You’ll then receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) notice from Prometric. Be sure to schedule your exam within the 90-day eligibility period listed on your ATT. If you need to make changes, follow the instructions in the ANCC General Testing and Renewal Handbook.
