What can you do during the NCC exam to land your best score? We’ve got you covered with these 10 proven strategies to help you perform your best on test day.
📝 NCC Exam Day Tips for Success
- Design Your Scratch Paper in Advance. Memorize your “scratch paper” a few weeks before exam day. Keep it short and high-yield.
- What to Include? Lab values (Hgb, Hct, MCV, platelets, WBC count, neutrophil %), potassium levels, urinalysis, murmurs, mnemonics, and cranial nerves are popular choices.
- Use Tutorial Time Wisely. The computer tutorial time is free—use it to jot down your scratch paper notes. If time runs out, move on.
- Mark and Move On. Use the “mark” function for questions you’re unsure about. Return later with a fresh perspective.
- Don’t Panic at the Start. The first few questions are often harder by design. Make your best guess, mark the question, and keep going.
- Avoid Rare Diagnoses. When in doubt, stick to common primary care conditions. Don’t choose exotic diseases unless the evidence clearly points that way.
- Manage Your Time. Spending more than 60 seconds per question? Take your best shot, mark it, and move forward.
- Take Smart Breaks. The countdown timer doesn’t stop. Keep bathroom breaks under 5 minutes to preserve time.
- Recharge if Needed. A quick reset—stretch, water, splash of cold water—can help you refocus during this long exam. Keep breaks short and intentional.
- Answer Every Question. There’s no penalty for guessing. Unanswered questions count as wrong, so make sure all questions are filled in before time runs out.
