What It Means to Be a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE®)

With excerpts from Certified Nurse Educator (CNE®) Review Manual, Third Edition, by Ruth A. Wittmann-Price PhD, RN, CNS, CNE, CHSE, ANEF, FAAN, et al.

Being a CNE®: What Does It Mean?

Often referred to by its acronym, CNE®, a Certified Nurse Educator is, at minimum, a registered nurse (RN) with additional education and/or experience. In short, a CNE® is responsible for the education of nursing students across degree levels, helping shape the next generation of healthcare professionals.

What Does a CNE® Do?

CNEs® have wide-ranging responsibilities that include:

  • Lesson planning and curriculum building.

  • Assessing student competencies.

  • Coaching students and offering academic and career guidance.

  • Creating lectures and advising students on projects.

As primary educators for future nurses, they help students identify which specialty areas to pursue and prepare them for real-world practice.

Nurse educators also require expertise in:

  • Learning concepts and teaching theories.

  • Strategies to promote clinical reasoning and higher-level thinking.

  • Curriculum planning and instructional design.

  • Effective teaching for learners with diverse needs and abilities.

  • Evidence-based clinical teaching and integration of active learning methods.

While many CNEs® focus primarily on teaching, many also maintain clinical practice to stay current and connected to patient care.

How Do I Become a CNE®?

The journey to becoming a CNE® begins with becoming a registered nurse. From there, you’ll need additional education and experience to qualify for the CNE® certification exam, which is administered by the National League for Nursing (NLN).

The exam consists of:

  • 130 scored multiple-choice questions

  • 20 pre-test questions (not scored, but included for future exam development)
