So, What’s the CNE® Exam Like?

/ Exam Prep / By Springer Publishing Editorial Staff / August 20, 2025

What to Expect on CNE® Exam Day

It pays to be mentally prepared for what’s to come on exam day! Here’s what you can expect—from format to timing and everything in between.

Overview

Offered by the National League for Nursing (NLN), the Certified Nurse Educator (CNE®) credential allows nurse educators to demonstrate their qualifications and expertise. Many schools, hospitals, and nursing programs either prefer or require faculty to hold CNE® certification. It is also a valuable credential for career advancement in nursing education.

The exam is administered through PSI and certification is valid for five years.

The Format

  • The CNE® is a computer-based exam (CBT) that you complete in a single sitting.

  • Once finished, you’ll immediately receive a score report showing Pass or Fail, along with raw scores by content category.

  • The exam consists of 150 multiple-choice questions, each with four answer options.

  • Questions are designed across cognitive levels: recall, application, and analysis.

The Questions and Timing

  • Of the 150 questions, only 130 are scored. The remaining 20 are pretest questions used for future exam development. Since you won’t know which are scored, treat every question seriously.

  • You will have three hours to complete the exam (including a short tutorial).

  • There is no penalty for guessing. Use the bookmark feature if you’re unsure and return to the question later. Navigation arrows allow you to move forward and backward freely.

Exam Content Areas

The CNE® exam tests six major competencies, weighted as follows:

Content Area % of Exam
Facilitate Learning 22%
Facilitate Learner Development and Socialization 15%
Use Assessment and Evaluation Strategies 19%
Participate in Curriculum Design and Evaluation of Program Outcomes 17%
Pursue Continuous Quality Improvement in the Academic Nurse Educator Role 12%
Engage in Scholarship, Service, and Leadership (includes Change Agent/Leader, Scholarship of Teaching, and Academic Community Roles) 15%

The Results

  • Your pass/fail report is presented immediately at the testing site.

  • Successful candidates receive their official certificate by mail from the NLN Academic Nurse Educator Certification Program within six to eight weeks.
