With excerpts from Clinical Nurse Leader Certification Review, Third Edition, by Cynthia R. King, PhD, MSN, NP, RN, CNL, FAAN, and Sally Gerard, DNP, RN, CDE, CNL

It pays to be mentally prepared for what’s to come on exam day! Here’s what you can expect—from exam format to timing and results.

About the Certification

The Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL®) certification is administered by the Commission on Nurse Certification (CNC), an independent branch of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). Nurses who meet eligibility requirements, demonstrate the required knowledge, and achieve a passing score are awarded CNL® certification. The CNC also supports ongoing professional development through recertification requirements.

Exam Format

  • Computer-based exam, taken in one sitting

  • 140 total questions: a mix of multiple-choice items and unfolding case studies

  • Each question has four answer choices, with only one correct answer

  • 120 questions count toward your score; 20 are “trial” or “pretest” questions not scored

Helpful Hint: Each section of an unfolding case study has only one multiple-choice question with a single correct answer.

  • Exam covers 3 major content areas with 7–23 subdomains (see blueprint below)

  • Questions test three cognitive levels:
