The Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (Across the Lifespan) Certification (PMHNP-BC) validates your expertise in psychiatric-mental health practice. Formerly known as the Family Psychiatric–Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, this credential demonstrates excellence and advanced knowledge in the field.


Exam Format

The PMHNP-BC certification exam is administered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

  • Type: Computer-based, at a testing center

  • Eligibility: Graduate of an accredited master’s, doctoral, or postgraduate NP program with at least 500 supervised clinical hours in psychiatric-mental health

  • Application: Submit transcripts and apply online to receive your Authorization to Test before scheduling


Questions and Time

  • Length: 175 questions in 3.5 hours

  • Scoring: 150 scored items + 25 unscored pretest questions

  • Format: Multiple-choice plus innovative item types:

    • Drag-and-drop: Match options (e.g., evidence-based practice steps, anatomy)

    • Extended multiple-choice: Select more than one correct answer
