TCRN® Exam: Test-Taking Tips for Success

Frequently, the difference between passing and failing the TCRN® exam depends on your test-taking skills. Remember:

Do not read into the questions. Take each question and its information at face value.
Answer every question. Leaving blanks will count against you. Even an educated guess gives you a 25% chance of being correct.

1. Focus on Key Words

Key words highlight exactly what the question is asking. Examples: always, earliest, first, on admission, best, least, immediately, initial.

Hint:
If the question asks for the “best” response, it usually means all answers could be correct—you’ll need to choose the most appropriate one for that scenario.

2. Eliminate Wrong Answers

If you immediately recognize an incorrect option, cross it out. Narrowing choices boosts your odds.

Hint:
Often you can reduce it to two plausible options, giving you a 50/50 shot.

3. Be Careful with Absolutes

Avoid answers with words like always or never. These are rarely correct in healthcare.

Hint:
Trust your first impression. Don’t dwell too long—bookmark and return if needed.

4. Don’t Panic Over Unknowns

You’re not expected to know every answer.

Hint:
Take a breath, keep moving, and celebrate the questions you do know.

5. Don’t Look for Patterns

Answer choices don’t follow predictable patterns.

Hint:
For long scenarios, read the question first, then the scenario, then reread the question to focus on what’s being asked.

6. Read All Options

There may be multiple correct answers, but one is the most correct.

Hint:
Don’t settle for the first plausible option—choose the best one.

7. Answer Only What’s Asked

Stick to the question provided. Don’t assume extra details.

Hint:
All the information you need is in the question itself.

8. Watch for Timeframe Clues

Questions often use specific timeframes. Example: Which complication of subarachnoid hemorrhage is seen 7–10 days after the bleed?

Hint:
All listed answers might occur—but only one matches the timeframe.

9. “Gold Standard” Questions

These ask for the most reliable or accurate option, not the most common.

Hint:
Formulate your answer before looking at the choices. Once you’ve selected, move on—don’t second-guess.

10. Choose Patient-Centered Care

Select answers that promote supportive and facilitative care.

Hint:
Look for words like nurture, aid, support, reinforce, encourage, assist.

Summary

Certification is a journey of growth and professionalism. You’ll learn new material, recall forgotten knowledge, and strengthen your practice. Stay positive and motivated—you’re on your way to success!
