As you get ready to take the TCRN® certification exam, staying relaxed and confident is just as important as studying the material. Below are preparation strategies and test-day tips to help you perform your best.
Preparation Strategies
-
Stay Positive – Avoid negative thoughts about passing or failing. Confidence helps you stay focused.
-
Set Your Test Date and Plan Ahead – Establish a realistic study schedule.
-
Prioritize Smartly – Start with the areas where you feel least confident.
-
Use the Exam Blueprint – Review the percentage of each body system and dedicate more study time to higher-weighted topics.
-
Know Your Learning Style – Study in the way that works best for you—solo or with a group.
-
Use Multiple Study Tools – Flashcards, practice questions, review courses, and study guides (both outline and narrative formats) can all reinforce your knowledge.
-
Practice Timed Questions – Allow no more than 2 minutes per question (about 50 per hour) to build test-day stamina.
-
Review Practice Question Rationale – When you miss a question, ask yourself:
-
Did I not know the content? → Go back and restudy.
-
Did I misread the question or answer choices?
-
Did I overlook a timeline, age clue, or symptom?
-
-
Study Beyond Your Specialty – Don’t just review what you know well. Spend more time in areas outside your daily practice.
On the Day of the Test
-
Eat Smart – Have a healthy meal and limit liquids to avoid unnecessary breaks. Remember: restroom breaks count against your time.
-
Skip Last-Minute Cramming – It only increases anxiety. Plan a small reward for yourself after the exam instead.
-
Plan Your Travel – Know the test site location and how long it takes to get there. Being late will increase stress—and if you’re more than 15 minutes late, you won’t be allowed in.
-
Bring Proper Documentation – Have your approval letter and two forms of ID (including one photo ID). Leave personal items at home or in your car. Lockers are usually available.
-
Familiarize Yourself with CBT – A short computer-based testing tutorial is available before your exam begins. Test time starts once you begin the first question.
-
Stay in the Testing Room – Leaving without authorization will void your test.
-
Time Management – You’ll have 3 hours to complete the exam. Pace yourself carefully.
-
Receive Immediate Results – Your pass/fail report will be given onsite after your exam and evaluation.
