Tips for the FNP Exam
Preparing for the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) certification exam takes time, focus, and a structured approach. These 10 strategies will help you make the most of your study sessions and walk into test day with confidence.
1. Start Early and Be Consistent
Begin reviewing 3 to 4 months in advance. Dedicate 2–3 hours per session, or break it into 1-hour blocks. Choose the time of day when you’re most alert to maximize retention.
2. Organize by Organ System
Photocopy the table of contents of your primary care textbook and mark the conditions you need to review most. Then schedule focused study blocks by system.
3. Focus on Weak Areas
Spend extra time on subjects that challenge you. For example, if orthopedics is a weak spot, devote 3 days to it instead of just one.
4. Take a Review Course
If possible, attend a quality review course or use recordings. Educator Maria T. Codina Leik, MSN, APRN, BC, FNP-C, offers live and webinar-based courses (npreview.com).
5. Keep a “Problem Notebook”
Buy a fresh notebook for concepts you struggle with. Write down your questions, research the answers, and revisit them until you’re confident.
6. Study with a Partner
Connect with another test taker—local or remote—and quiz each other. Teaching concepts out loud reinforces your own understanding.
7. Prioritize High-Weight Topics
Not all organ systems carry the same weight on the exam. Use your review book to identify high-yield areas and concentrate your efforts there.
8. Don’t Forget Nonclinical Content (ANCC)
If you’re preparing for the ANCC exam, spend at least 30% of your study time on nonclinical subjects such as leadership, research, and policy.
9. Try Group Study
If you learn well in groups, organize one yourself. Decide in advance which systems or diseases to cover so your time is efficient.
10. Use the “Backward Reading” Technique
For long questions, read the last sentence first to understand what’s being asked. Then read the question normally—this helps you spot key details quickly.
