Top 10 Tips for Success on the FNP Certification Exam

Prepping for the FNP certification exam? These strategies will help you stay focused, manage your time, and land your best score.

1. Use the “Mark” Command

If you’re unsure about a question, mark it and move on. You can return to it after completing the exam.

2. Avoid Exotic Diseases

When guessing, avoid rare or obscure diseases. The exam emphasizes primary care conditions.

3. Don’t Get Shaken by the First Few Questions

The first questions are often designed to be more difficult. Take a best guess, mark them, and return later.

4. Prepare Your “Scratch Paper” in Advance

Design and memorize what you’ll jot down—keep it concise and practical.

5. Use Tutorial Time Wisely

During the computer tutorial, quickly write down memorized facts. If you run out of time, skip it and start the exam.

6. Prioritize Useful Facts

Include quick-reference items such as lab values (hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCV, platelets, WBC, neutrophil percentage, potassium, urinalysis), murmurs, mnemonics, and cranial nerves.

7. Never Leave Questions Blank

There’s no penalty for guessing. If time runs short, answer everything—even randomly. Unanswered questions count as errors.

8. Manage Your Time

Don’t spend more than 60 seconds on a single question. Make your best choice, mark it, and revisit later if possible.

9. Take Quick Breaks if Needed

The exam is mentally taxing. If you feel fatigued, step away briefly—drink water, use the restroom, or splash cold water on your face. Keep breaks under five minutes.

10. Remember: The Clock Keeps Running

Breaks do not stop the countdown timer. Use them sparingly and strategically.
