What to Expect on CHSE™ Exam Day

It pays to be mentally prepared for what’s ahead! Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect on exam day—from format and timing to scoring and results.

About the CHSE™ Exam

Offered by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH), the Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE™) credential formally recognizes expertise in simulation education. Certification is valid for three years.

The exam is administered through ISO-Quality Testing, Inc. (IQT), a secure testing provider.

Exam Format and Questions

The CHSE™ exam is computer-based and consists of 115 multiple-choice questions. Of these, 100 are scored, while the remaining 15 are unscored “pretest” questions used to validate future exam items.

👉 You won’t know which questions are pretest items, so answer all of them as if they count toward your score.

Content Domains

The exam blueprint is divided into five domains:

Demonstrate Knowledge of Simulation Principles, Practice, and Methodology 34%
Educate and Assess Learners Using Simulation 52%
Manage Overall Simulation Resources and Environments 6%
Engage in Scholarly Activities 4%

What to Bring on Exam Day

When you arrive, you must present:

  • Admission Letter received upon application approval

  • User ID and Passcode from the IQT website

  • A valid photo ID with signature, such as a:

    • Driver’s license

    • State-issued ID card

    • Passport

    • Military ID

⚠️ Not accepted: library cards, school IDs, credit cards, gym membership cards, or any ID with only a signature and no photo.

Scoring and Results

  • Immediate results: You’ll receive your score on-site as soon as you finish the test, and a copy will also be emailed to you.

  • Verification: Results are reported to SSH, verified, and mailed out in approximately 4 weeks.

  • Certificates: Official certificates are mailed on a quarterly basis.
