Preparing for the CHSE™ Certification Exam

As you’re getting ready to take the Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE™) exam, how can you keep yourself cool, calm, and collected? Here are some helpful preparation strategies to follow in order to make the grade!

Preparation Strategies

  • Stay Positive
Avoid negative thoughts about passing the examination. Negativity can morph into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

  • Set Your Test Date and Study Schedule
Establish a realistic schedule to prepare for the exam well in advance.

  • Prioritize Your Study Areas
Focus first on the topics you’re least familiar with.

  • Use Blueprint Percentages Wisely
Review the percentage weight of each body system and dedicate time accordingly—start with the areas that carry the largest percentage of the exam.

  • Know Your Learning Style
Decide if you study best alone or in a group, and structure your prep around your strengths.

  • Utilize Study Resources
Flashcards, practice questions, review courses, and study books (both outline and narrative formats) can all help you prepare effectively.

  • Practice With Time Limits
Simulate exam conditions by answering questions under timed sessions. Follow the “50-questions-per-hour” rule—about 2 minutes per question.

  • Review Missed Questions Thoughtfully
When reviewing practice test rationales, ask yourself:

    • Did I not know the content?

    • Did I misread the question or the answers?

    • Did I miss an important clue (like age, timeline, or symptoms)?

  • Focus on Weak Areas
Spend less time reviewing content from your specialty area (you already know it). Concentrate on subjects you’re less comfortable with or don’t use in daily practice.

On the Day of the Test

  • Eat Smart
Have a healthy meal beforehand and limit fluids to avoid unnecessary breaks. Remember, restroom breaks don’t stop the clock.

  • Skip Last-Minute Cramming
Avoid cramming right before the test—it can increase anxiety. Instead, plan something enjoyable for after your exam.

  • Know Your Route
Plan your travel in advance. Arrive early so you’re not rushed. If you’re more than 15 minutes late, you won’t be allowed to test.

  • Bring the Right Materials
Take your approval letter and two forms of ID (one must be photo ID). Leave personal belongings at home or in your car. Lockers are typically provided.

  • Use the Tutorial Option
If needed, complete the computer-based testing tutorial before starting. Your test time begins once the first question appears.

  • Understand the Rules
Leaving the testing site without authorization voids the exam.

  • Time Management
You’ll have 3 hours to complete the test.

  • Get Your Results Immediately
Results are presented onsite following a short evaluation.
