/ Social Work / By Springer Publishing / December 31, 2025

Social workers often play vital roles in court settings, especially in cases involving families or vulnerable individuals. Preparing students for these responsibilities means blending legal knowledge with practical communication skills.

  1. Build Legal and Ethical Awareness
Teach key laws, confidentiality rules, and ethical decision-making through real-world case discussions.
  2. Practice Clear Communication
Use role-plays to help students write objective reports, testify confidently, and stay calm under questioning.
  3. Encourage Collaboration
Invite legal professionals to share courtroom expectations and highlight how social workers contribute to the legal process.
  4. Simulate Court Experiences
Mock hearings help students gain firsthand experience and reflect on professionalism and demeanor.
  5. Promote Reflection
Encourage journaling or debriefs to help students manage emotions and build self-awareness.

In Social Work Practice and the Law chapter 8 you introduce the essential knowledge and skills social work students need to participate confidently in legal proceedings. It explores the diverse roles social workers may play in trials and hearings and the core competencies required for each—such as preparing for court, understanding testimony and legal terms, guiding clients through the process, writing effective reports, and addressing ethical issues that may arise.

By the end of this chapter, your students will be equipped to approach courtroom participation with professionalism, clarity, and confidence—empowering both themselves and their clients in the legal setting.

Effective teaching prepares social workers to combine empathy with professionalism and ethics in the courtroom—ensuring their voices strengthen both justice and client advocacy.
